Ticker symbols

A ticker symbol is a convenient code, not usually an acronym, used to identify uniquely the publicly-traded shares of a company or corporation on a given exchange. Stock symbol may consist of letters, numbers or a combination of both - the caret ^ also has specific meaning.

The term "ticker" refers back to the ticking sound made by the tape machines used in the 1920's heyday of stock exchanges - and also after the late 20's, 30's depression of the market.
